PLAYER AWARDS

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

MIKE ROBERTS

Probably the closest Player of the Year we've ever had, due to the shocking season almost everybody had last year. Roberts was probably the best of a bad bunch with contributions with both bat and ball, and although the Roberts found Three difficult still maintained quite an impressive record. Mike scored 385 runs for the season at an average, that was somewhat disappointing by his high standards, of 25.67. In the bowling department though Mike was excellent, and for a leg-spinner who people normally attack, produced some astounding bowling figures. His best bowling figures were 7-36 against Cimla. Mike also pulled off one of the most unbelievabe bowling stats probably in the history of South Wales Cricket, when he bowled 15 overs, for one wicket and one run, which included 14 maidens!

PLAYERS PLAYER OF THE YEAR

MATTHEW FLYNN

This was an extremely close affair between two all-rounders, which Matthew pipped by a whisker. Flyyney's bowling could have been a lot better and we are still not seeing the full potential of him when it comes to charging in and giving it 100%. Twice last season he stormed in, and twice he was unplayable, but we need more out of him in that department. But Flyney's batting has come on leaps and bounds. He averaged 29.22 in the 2005 campaign, and scored 263 runs, which was excellent considering he regularly came in with Shopland when the team were a few wickets down and struggling.

His 63* against Carmarthen was probably the best batting performance of his life, especially after earlier almost cacking out of batting altogether because Rogers was bowling some quick stuff. After the initial period of worry, Flynn responded by despatching all bowlers, to all parts of the ground in a wonderful knock. Flynn pipped Jason, but it should be noted that Castaldi's performances were of first class standard last season with the ball, and with more solid contributions from him with the bat, he should become a more complete all-rounder.

CONTRIBUTION OF THE YEAR

TEA'S PEOPLE

Hirwaun would like to thank the Tea's people who once again made life easier for the team, with some excellent help and good array of food. Once again thank you, and we hope you continue to support us for the coming season.

PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR

( Performance of the Year is not necessarily the best batting performance of bowling performance. It is simply the moment or moments that changes a game, surpasses an expectation, or is a performance of the highest level )

JORDAN COLES/MATTHEW FLYNN

(joint effort v Carmarthen)

This was one of Hirwaun's all time highlights, a tremendous batting partnership against a side who sensed blood early on, and indeed drew blood! With Hirwaun struggling against some very quick and inspired bowling, these two blitzed away after defending the initial onslaught. Both played a brilliant game, and when the time was right to put their foot on the accelerator after playing themselves in, both carted the ball in a show of power and elegance to bewilder Carmarthen. Flynn ended with an excellent 63*, whilst Jordan was pure class in a simply stunning 87*. Taking Roberts out of the equation for the moment with some of his brilliant knocks, this was probably the definitive way to chase down big totals, showing initial patience, and then dominate counter attack.

BEST BATTING SCORE

MIKE ROBERTS

93 v Pontyberem (H)

A very good knock from Roberts, against bowlers who have troubled us in the past. There was no answer on this occasion though, as Mike hit an excellent 93.

BEST BOWLING FIGURES

MIKE ROBERTS

7-36 v Cimla, Away

Roberts nullified the Cimla batsmen on this unbelievably cold and blustery day, taking full advantage of a wind that blew many toupees off. Using guile, flight, dip, turn, and the wind which made him look like Shane Warne he collected seven scalps and ensured the run chase wouldn't be that tricky.

TEAM STATS

HIGHEST SCORE

229 v PONTYBEREM (H)

Roberts and Tay put on 133 for the first wicket in this clash, which meant that Pontyberem had a lot of work to do for the second innings. Top batting from both the openers ensured that the rest could play some strokes later on in the game.

LOWEST SCORE

33 v BAGLAN (H)

An extremely poor performance as Baglan skittled us for a mere 33. Very embarrassing.

SEASON MOMENTS

SEASON HIGH

Beating Briton Ferry at home after being crushed there

A tight call, I personally would have gone for the Carmarthen game, but beating Briton Ferry at home after the thumping we had at their patch was an equally good shout.

SEASON LOW

The entire season

2005 was such a big disappointment. It's the calling card of the relegated, but the teams that were above us had no right to be there if we had played anything like we can. We hammered Carmarthen who were promoted, and lost to some poor teams, who nevertheless finished above us. The bowling was good from some and shocking from others. Apart from one or two in the entire team, the batting was of a very low standard. It doesn't help that every other week we are playing on a minefield and it just doesn't suit Hirwaun's style of play with so many stroke players. Catches were dropped, there were too many four balls, and not enough people dig in for fifties.

NICKY THOMAS

An astonishing season really for one of Hirwaun's greatest ever left-arm bowlers!! This party animal rarely turned up unless he had had a night that Peter Stringfellow, Hugh Hefner and Michael Barrymore would have been proud of. It was a miracle on times that he could even see the pitch after spending the night with 10 tequila bottles, a girl named Mandy and a box of tissues. This party animal partied like it was 1975, after a Fleetwood Mac concert in which all the fans were invited back to Mick Fleetwood's for a ho-down session. Thommo, the club gives you the honourary 'Yeah Baby Party King of 2005' Award.
